Guide for International Students

Dear International Student,

Welcome to NUI Maynooth. I hope that you will enjoy your time here. I look forward to meeting with you when you arrive. The following is a general guide to accommodation and to help you through your first week in Ireland.

On campus accommodation is booked up quickly so you may be looking for accommodation in the general Maynooth area (unless you already have confirmation that you will be placed on campus; for further information you need to e-mail, fax or ring the Residence Officer). The message is DON'T PANIC! The residence Office will help you, over your first week in Maynooth, to secure accommodation in the area.

How Do I Apply for On-Campus Accommodation?

You apply for campus online at residence.nuim.ie.  There is no guarantee of campus accommodation but some accommodation is reserved for international students. You may place your name on a waiting list from January 2009 for the 2009/2010 academic year if you so wish. Application forms are available on request from the Residence Office.

THE CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 2009/10 is1st July 2009

Deposits & Rent

Residents pay a €500 deposit for campus accommodation for 2009-10. This is a security deposit which also covers utility bills. €15 is used as your contribution to the Campus Social and Cultural club which provides subsidised activities for campus residents.  Residents get statements of their metered gas and/or electricity costs and the unused part of the deposit is returned at the end of their stay. Rent on campus is paid in two instalments, one prior to moving in and the other towards the end of January. Rates for individual halls are listed below.

RIVER APARTMENTS

Students in these halls live in apartments where each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom. A typical apartment has five bedrooms each with its own en-suite bathroom. There are a limited number of twin rooms also available which also have en-suite bathrooms. Residents with personal computers also have the opportunity of internet access in their own room. In twin rooms both residents have internet access. There is a large kitchen, dining and lounge area.

Rent freeze on Campus.  In 2009/2010 the rent will remain at 2008/2009 rates.

Twin room: €94 per week. Total : €3,572 to be paid in two instalments.

Single room: €110 per week. Total: €4,180 to be paid in two instalments

RYE HALL

All bedrooms in Rye Hall are single and internet access is also available in each resident bedroom. There are a range of three-bed, four and seven bed apartments. Each apartment has at least two shower rooms. A select number of the bedrooms in Rye Hall are en-suite.

Single room: €96 per week. Total: €3,648 to be paid in two instalments

VILLAGE APARTMENTS

All students in these halls have single rooms and internet access is also available. Each five bedroom apartment has two bathrooms.

Single room: €90 per week. Total: €3,420 payable in two instalments.

ON CAMPUS RENT IS PAID PER SEMESTER. IT IS POSSIBLE TO SIGN A LEASE FOR ONE SEMESTER ONLY.

HOSTELS

Family Type Accommodation

Partial Board ("Digs") accommodation is readily available in Maynooth and surrounding areas on either a 5 or 7 day basis. 5 day accommodation suits all students who intend going home at weekends. Most digs accommodation is of this type. You will have either a single or shared room but be prepared to share a twin room as most single rooms are snapped up quickly. The following are the weekly costs in family type accommodation for 2008-09:

Partial Board costs approx. €115-€120 Monday to Friday; €135-€142 Full Week. Deposits will usually be the equivalent of 2 weeks rent. Again the first week will also be paid on arrival.

Self-Catering costs approx. €80-€86 per week. Deposits will usually be the equivalent of 4 weeks rent. Again the first week will also be paid on arrival. Students cook for themselves in self-catering.

A lot of the rooms in family homes are only available 5 days a week so will NOT suit international students.

Houses & Housesharing

The housing list for 2009/10 will be available from the Residence Office from Wednesday April 29th 2009.

Cost: The cost of renting a house varies. Rent can work out anywhere between €70 and €100 per week, depending on the property and the number of students in the house.
Deposit: Generally one month's rent is required as a deposit. The first month's rent is also usually paid in advance.

How long do I book into a hostel for?

I'd advise you to book into accommodation for approximately 3-4 days. Remember that the Residence Office opens from Mondays to Fridays, so if you are coming to Ireland on a weekend day you may need to find temporary accommodation for a little longer. When you arrive in NUI Maynooth you can come to the Residence Office where we will provide you with a map of the Maynooth area and a list of available accommodation.
You will then view the accommodation and decide where exactly you are going to live.
We will give every assistance that you may need.

When I get to Maynooth where do I go?

Maynooth is a small town so the university is not difficult to find. The Residence Office is situated in the Student Services Centre, North Campus. The office hours are 9.30 - 5p.m. Closed for lunch 1 - 2 pm.  We will let you know of all available accommodation on your arrival. We will assist you in any way that we can.
REMEMBER THAT YOU MAY HAVE TO SHARE A ROOM.
Single rooms go quickly and are sometimes scarce. Be prepared to share.
If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to contact me Ph: (01) 708 3322.

Looking forward to meeting you when you arrive.

Fiona Kenny
Residence Officer.
