Residence Office
Accommodation Information for Prospective Students 2009-10
NUI Maynooth currently houses nearly 900 students on campus. All prospective students may apply through the Residence Office for campus housing. This brief guide will give you information on all the different types of rooms available on campus. The Residence Office also compiles lists of off campus accommodation with rooms available in traditional “digs” accommodation, self-catering in family homes and in private rented apartments and houses. Again information provided here should prove useful for you. So, if you plan on attending NUI Maynooth, this information is for you.
All applications for on campus accommodation are online. There is no application fee for campus accommodation. Completing the online form is not a guarantee of campus accommodation but a minimum of 40% of all on-campus accommodation is reserved for 1st year students. You may place your name on a waiting list for the 2009/10 academic year as soon as you have a CAO number. When you receive your CAO offer for NUI Maynooth please contact the Residence Office as soon as possible and we will let you know if you have secured campus accommodation. Rooms are allocated randomly so you may be offered a place in a twin room. This has proved a great way for first years to get to know each other and many friends have been made this way. For students living off-campus, we have comprehensive lists and our staff will be happy to give you every help and advice.

Self Catering/Partial Board (“Digs”) accommodation is readily available in Maynooth and surrounding areas on either a 5 or 7 day basis. 5 day accommodation suits all students who intend going home at weekends. Most digs accommodation is of this type. You will have either a single or shared room but be prepared to share a twin room as most single rooms are snapped up quickly. The following is a breakdown of the weekly costs in family type accommodation:
Self-Catering costs approx. €80-€86 per week. Deposits will usually be the equivalent of 4 weeks rent. Again the first week will also be paid on arrival.
Partial Board costs approx. €115-€120 Monday to Friday; €135-€142 Full Week. Deposits will usually be the equivalent of 2 weeks rent. Again the first week will also be paid on arrival.
Houses for private renting are also available in all the areas mentioned. Students themselves will be furnished with a checklist and information relating to leases, minimum notice and the rights and obligations of tenants, to make their search for and stay in accommodation that bit easier. Again houses do get taken up quickly in the year, often before CAO offers in late August. Many 1st year students will acquire houses at the end of their first academic year, when they have fully settled into University life. Often 1st Year students go into hostels, digs or self-catering accommodation where they usually make friends in similar or other 1st Year courses. Often people who meet in digs accommodation go on to find houses together for 2nd year.
Cost: The cost of renting a house varies. Rent can work out anywhere between €70 and €100 per week, depending on the property and the number of students in the house.
Deposit: Generally one month’s rent is required as a deposit. The first month’s rent is also usually paid in advance.
Accommodation lists are available from the Residence Office in NUI Maynooth. When a student decides to take up an offer of a place in the University, they are requested to contact the Residence Office, Students Services Centre, North Campus as soon as possible. Students must view accommodation before paying deposits as this minimises problems in the long run. There is no way around finding accommodation other than actually coming to Maynooth, where we will give you every assistance We will give you a list of accommodation on your arrival. This ensures that you have the most up to date information.
Students generally live in the following areas; Maynooth, Celbridge and Leixlip. Celbridge and Leixlip are very close to Maynooth and a large number of the student population live in these areas. Both areas are very easily accessible by bus. It takes on average 10-15 minutes to come by bus to college. Leixlip is also a train stop away from Maynooth. A lot of students now live in Lucan and in areas along the train line. When planning for coming to college remember to budget for commuter tickets and/or bus/train fare.
The train to Maynooth leaves from Pearse/Connolly station so is easily accessible for a lot of students who live near to rail, suburban rail or DART services. You will also find that there are a number of buses operating directly from some areas. These include private buses from: Templeogue, Tallaght, Clondalkin, Kells, Navan, Trim, Dunboyne, Carlow, Athy & Cavan.
When you arrive in Maynooth we will give you information pertaining to your rights as a tenant. Of course, we will also let you know what your obligations are, both under the law and to the local community, of which you will be a member. Remember that you may be living in a long established residential area. Introduce yourselves to your neighbours and afford them the respect that your own family expects in their own home and neighbourhood. Yes, this does mean don't keep them awake at night!
If you are in digs or self-catering accommodation we will go through any house rules that your landlady/lord may have. It is important for you to work these out before you move in.
Again we will let you know the amount of notice you will be required to give when leaving various types of accommodation.
If you have special accommodation requirements please let us know and we will give you every assistance in securing accommodation.
If you have children it is important that you contact us again as soon as you are offered a University place, as we then set about looking for suitable accommodation. As you are probably all too well aware, it can be difficult to secure quality accommodation that is child friendly. We will do all we can to help you in your search.
There are wheelchair accessible apartments on campus. Please let us know if you are a wheelchair user so we can assess the number of students requiring wheelchair accessible accommodation. If you have any type of disability which you think we should know of in relation to accommodation do not hesitate to contact us.
If you will be in receipt of rent allowance from the local health board, again let the Residence Office know. In 2009-10 there will be a limited number of places reserved on campus for students on rent allowance. Please be aware that rent allowance is available to students who are on back to education allowance and who have been in rented accommodation for the previous six months. Please check your eligibility for rent allowance well in advance of coming to college
We’d like to wish you well in the Leaving Cert or with your mature student or other application. So best of luck and we hope to see you for the 2009/10 academic year.
